BETHANY, TX (KSLA) -

No one was hurt Wednesday afternoon in Panola County when an 18-wheeler plowed into an empty house in Bethany, but there is quite a mess to clean up.

Sheriff's and Texas deputies are investigating the wreck, which happened on Highway 79 near Stateline Road just after Noon about a mile from the state line.

Police believe the driver of an 18-wheeler heading northbound was reaching for a water bottle when he struck a car that was pulled off on the side of the road.

That collision sent the big rig into a vacant house nearby, flipping its trailer and dumping cargo in the process. Deputies on the scene described it only as "general merchandise," but were able to confirm that it does not involve hazardous material.

Highway 79 remains open, but will likely have to be reduced to one lane when it comes time to re-load the dumped cargo into another truck.

If that can't be done before dark, officials on the scene say it might have to wait until Thursday morning.

There is no word yet on whether the driver of the big rig will be cited.
