Big crowds expected at Valdosta's South GA Classic

VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -

Some of the top up-and-coming pro golfers, and a man who used to be one of the biggest names in golf are in Valdosta this week.

Two-time major champion John Daly is in the field for the 7th Annual South Georgia Classic.

Today the professionals took a swing at teaching the amateurs their way around the course during the South Georgia Classic Pro-Am. Tomorrow starts the 4-day tournament with some of the game's biggest up-and-coming professional golfers. And with John Daly joining at the last minute, huge crowds are expected.

"Absolutely, everybody loves John Daly," said Kinderlou Forest General Manager, Steve Singley.

Daly spent the day practicing on Kinderlou Forest's 7,800 yard course. Daly won the 1991 PGA Championship and the 1995 British Open.

"He's an exciting player and a lot of people like to watch him and I'm sure people have come to watch him that may not have been planning on coming before," said Valdosta Mayor John Gayle.

Tomorrow the stadium seats will be filled with thousands of spectators. Tournament officials expect this to be their biggest turnout ever.

The Valdosta-Lowndes County Tourism Authority projects the tournament will bring more than $3 million to the area over the next few days. And some out-of-towners say they don't want to leave.

Lee Higgins from Austin, Texas said, "Everybody has been great, the southern hospitality for lack of a better word has been definitely going on here."

You can expect the South Georgia Classic back again next year and hopefully some other big name tournaments.

"We're looking for a title sponsor, but from speaking to tour officials with the golf course we can have just about anything we would want tour-wise. So its all about money and we hope to continue bringing this back to Valdosta and Kinderlou Forest for a long time," said Singley.

The tournament runs tomorrow to Sunday and tickets are just $5.
