M.L. King remains closed, I-20 re-opened in Gregg Co.

The M.L. King bridge remains closed after an 18-wheeler struck the bridge columns and burst into flames Monday morning.

Authorities shut down the overpass and the westbound side of I-20 in Gregg County because of that fatal accident that happened just after 4 a.m.

According to TxDOT's Larry Krantz, one lane of I-20 westbound was re-opened after noon Monday and both lanes were open again by Monday evening.

There were two people in the truck at the time of the accident. The passenger Vickey Patterson, 44, of Mississippi was in the sleeper part of the truck and died at the scene. The driver of the truck Douglas Spencer, 48, also of Mississippi was taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. He has since been released. There was also a dog in the cab of the truck that made it out alive.

Motorists should continue to use alternate routes to avoid delays in this area.
