There were a lot of high fives at Texas East Gymnastics on Monday.
Tyler's Alaina Johnson won the NCAA national championship in the uneven bars for the University of Florida on Sunday. Johnson also clinched the team title for the Gators on Saturday.
"It's just like she's a still a member of our team," said Texas East Gymnastics coach Martin Parsley. "It's a part of being on a team, you remember it forever. People that were graduating when she was 8 or 9 years old, I got text messages from them saying 'We won.'"
Johnson's win, marks the first time in Texas East Gymnastics history, that one of its former competitors has won an NCAA national title. It's a major accomplishment for the entire program.
"As soon as Alaina could, she got on the phone with us," said Texas East Gymnastics coach Stacy Panfil-Parsley. "It's our win as much as it's her win and Florida's win. It's a wonderful testament to this program that gentlemen there and what we can do at here at Texas East. We have a lot of girls here on there college search now."
