East Texas hospital promotes health through fitness

Posted: Updated:

Promoting 'health through fitness' was the message sent in the triathlon held in Longview Sunday.

The 2013 "Institute Triathlon" kicked off at the Good Shepherd Institute for Healthy Living. It included a 200-meter swim, and was followed by a 13-mile bike ride and a 5K run.

Many of the doctors and nurses from Good Shepherd Medical Center took part in the event. Funds raised through the event will go to scholarships and providing services through the institute, and the goal of promoting health through exercise.

"If our country, if our people focus on health care taking care of their bodies being health conscious, and being fit, a lot of the problems we see today, the escalation of diabetes, hypertension, the chronic medical illnesses.. would drop significantly," said Dr. Jacob Brown, an emergency room doctor for Good Shepherd Medical Center.

Nearly 150 competitors participated in the event. It took around 4 hours for all entries to complete.
