Longview health center hosts triathlon

Promoting health through fitness was the message sent in the first annual triathlon held in one East Texas city. The 2013 institute triathlon kicked off at the Good Shepherd Institute for healthy living. A 200-meter swim was followed by a 13-mile bike ride , and a 5-k run. Many of the doctors and nurses from Good Shepherd medical center took part in the event. Funds raised through the event will go to scholarships and providing services through the institute, and the goal of promoting health , through exercise.

"If our country , if people would focus on health care taking care of their bodies being health conscious and being fit, a lot of the problems we see today the escalation of diabetes, hypertension, the chronic medical illnesses would drop significantly, says triathlete and Good Shepherd E-R doctor Jacob Brown.

Nearly 150 competitors participated in the first annual event.
