Boston manhunt coverage offers critical piece of closure

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -

The Boston manhunt garnered the attention of people around the world Friday. For some, the search for those responsible is an emotional journey for closure.

"It should glue the nation that we don't know how severe this is for our nation," Jean Schmidt told FOX19.

The former congresswoman was among the thousands of runners on the streets for the big day.

She says she crossed the finish line less than 15 minutes before the bombs went off.

"I haven't left … I haven't left Boston," Schmidt said holding her marathon jacket.

Boston papers sit unread at the end of Schmidt's kitchen table.

"Part of me doesn't want to go back to that finish line," she said. "And mentally I'm not ready to."

And yet she cannot pull herself from the coverage.

"We have to be honest, it is exciting but I think the majority of Americans, we want to see this guy caught," she said. "I don't care how we get to the truth. I want the truth."

She says that closure is critical not just for herself, but for the victims.

"They have the right to know that the people that harmed them in such a wicked and awful way are caught and deserve justice, and get that justice," he said.

In the meantime, she is left with questions.

"Why? Why did those two brothers do that to us? What did we ever do to the world? Why do we deserve this kind of an act?" she questioned. "Because of our constitution? Because of our freedom?"

Schmidt has tried to shield her grand kids from the coverage, but knows one day when they are ready and when there are answers she will tell them.

"I've kept every piece of Boston because I want to be able to say to them ‘This was the marathon that forever changed every runner's life, my life, your life, and America's life'," she shared with FOX19.
