Nashville businesses caught on camera serving underage customers

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

More than a dozen Nashville businesses are in trouble after being caught on video selling alcohol to people under the age of 21, and police say the number of stores breaking the law is alarming.

"Fifty percent is way too high. Twenty-five percent is way too high. Quite frankly, one is too high," said DeWayne Holman, with the group Nashville Prevention Partnership.

Holman's group works with Metro police to find businesses selling booze to people under 21 by using teens who go inside and try to buy.

Time after time, video shows underage customers served alcohol at bars, restaurants and gas stations. Some are even seen showing identification to servers, but they still receive alcohol with no questions asked.

"The licenses in Tennessee are pretty simple to see. If you look at a license that's under the age of 21, it has a red strip that says 'under 21 until' whatever the date is," Holman said.

With prom and graduation season approaching, authorities say they are planning more busts targeting underage alcohol sales. They say everybody knows the law but find that many clerks and bartenders are simply too distracted to apply the law.

Businesses that sell to underage people face several thousand dollars in fines, can lose their alcohol permit and the perpetrators can even be arrested.

Police say that out of the 14 businesses they checked last weekend, half were cited for selling alcohol to underage customers.
