Tyler ISD students receive grant to refinish historical markers

Posted: Updated:

From Tyler ISD:

Three Robert E. Lee High School juniors received a grant for $500 from Historic Tyler, Inc. to refinish historical markers in the Tyler area. Lucas Stephens, Christian Rivera and Martin Retana will organize groups of volunteers to restore 10 historical markers using the funds.

Robert E. Lee High School Counselor George Ann Reed, who also serves as a Historic Tyler, Inc. board member, brought the idea for the project to the International Baccalaureate (IB) students. Lucas, Christian and Martin decided to team up to take on the task.

In a letter to the Historic Tyler, Inc. Board of Directors, the students wrote, "Our goal is to start with $500, and, granted we have success, pursue further investment and further restoration opportunities."

The students will complete the project as part of their International Baccalaureate (IB) Creativity, Actions and Service (CAS) program. The IB Programme prepares students for college by offering a complete schedule of college level classes that emphasize global understanding throughout the curriculum. The IB Programme also requires education outside the classroom through the CAS program. Each IB student plans and participates in a major project that will impact the community.

"This project keeps our state and national markers looking fresh and up-to-date for our visitors to enjoy," Ellen Musselman, Historic Tyler, Inc. board member, said. "This is a great opportunity for the students to learn about preservation while also doing something that benefits our community."

The students plan to begin the 10-step refinishing process on one of the historical markers later this month.
