BARDSTOWN, KY (WAVE) - A woman charged with murder after police arrested her for shooting and killing her boyfriend may have been acting in self defense.

Susan Marlow pleaded not guilty in a Nelson County courtroom Friday. Marlow is accused of shooting James "Marcy" Thomas III in her driveway.

Marlow's attorney Jason Floyd said Marlow and Thomas dated and were not always on good terms. "I think the police records will show there's a long history of domestic issues and police visits out to that site," Floyd said.

Court records reveal Marlow took out an emergency protective order against Thomas in 2008.

The shooting happened April 10 outside Marlow's Bardstown home on Plum Run Road. Police said Marlow fired at least two gunshots, killing Thomas.

Floyd said he's still combing through police reports and couldn't talk about what led up to the shooting. "It's a shocking situation for her as well," Floyd said regarding his conversation with Marlow. "She's very disappointed for all sides involved."

The judge set a $200,000 property bond, which means Marlow could use her home as bail credit to be released in the meantime.

Marlow is due back in court April 16 for a preliminary hearing.
