TEXARKANA, TX (KSLA) -

A 4-year-old pre-Kindergarten student at Liberty-Eylau School is recovering in a Dallas hospital after being run over by a lawn mower.

Now, while Alex Flower's family and friends pull for a full recovery, they're also looking for help to handle his mounting medical bills.

Alex's classmates at Liberty Eylau have made a get-well card, and each student has signed it.

"It's been hard because it's one of our babies," says Alex's teacher Theresa Stone.

The accident happened while Alex's sister was mowing the lawn. As the boy tried to jump on the moving mower, he slipped.

Family members say Alex lost three fingers and is being treated for a severe leg injury that could require amputation.

Alex has had two surgeries and is expected to have another one on Friday. Afterward, doctors are expected to determine whether they'll be able to save his leg.

Though his sister pulled him to safety from beneath the mower, she still grieves about the incident, says Alex's grandmother, Gayle Taylor.

Taylor is taking care of Alex's twin brother and other siblings while his parents stay with Alex at Children's Hospital in Dallas.

"And they're always close. Sleep together, do everything together. Eat at their own little table, you know. He's just lost," Taylor says about Alex's twin brother.

Alex's family and classmates are helping his recovery by keeping in touch. Stone says the students have talked with Alex by speakerphone.

But that still leaves the need for help with medical bills.

An account has been set up at Mil-Way Federal Credit Union, which has branches in Ashdown, Arkansas, on 7th and on Arkansas Boulevard in Texarkana. The account is under the name of Alex Flowers.

When the town of Gilmer is mentioned in relation to sports, the Buckeyes powerhouse football program immediately comes to mind. And that's fair considering they have won three state titles and racked up 13 double digit win seasons since 2000. But a small 1A school about nine miles away deserves some attention these days as well.
