Senate to vote on gun control debate Thursday

NEWTOWN, CT (WFSB) -

While the United States Senate is set to begin debating gun reform, in Newtown, a grass roots group said the families of Sandy Hook Elementary School deserve a vote.

The Newtown Action Alliance has been reading the names of every person shot and killed across the country since the Sandy Hook tragedy, starting Wednesday afternoon, and will continue into Thursday.

"People are dying every day at the hands of guns, and we need the Senate to do the right thing," said Gary Seri. "Congress needs to keep moving forward and saving lives."

NAA officials said reading off the names is their way of hoping to keep the pressure on Congress, adding after Sandy Hook on Dec. 14, Newtown deserves a vote on gun reform.

That debate is expected to begin Thursday.

In the Senate, there is a bipartisan compromise on background checks. If passed, they would now be required for gun purchases at gun shows and with online orders, but not for private sales between two people.

While there is a compromise, it doesn't mean the bill will pass.

Officials with the National Rifle Association and its allies said they are vowing to block the bill to prevent the debate form getting stared.

However, President Barack Obama's wish list, including a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, has little chance of getting passed in the Senate, let alone the Republican-controlled House of Representatives.

But, in Newtown, this group said they're not deterred, rather just determined to keep moving forward.

"Change has to come," Seri said. "There are my friends. They lost their children, teachers I was friends with and someone has to stand up for them."

The group plans on reading the names until at least 10 a.m.
