Crossroads raises $377k by eating beans & rice

OAKLEY, OH (FOX19) -

Crossroads Community Church raised more than $300,000 thanks to one recipe: Rice and beans.

Red beans, black beans and even baked beans were all part of a challenge put on by Crossroads Church to its members, called 'Beans and Rice Week'.

Members were asked to eat beans and rice for as many meals as possible during one week, and save the cash normally spent on food.

Then, the money raised would be invested in three great efforts in the Tri-State.

Crossroads officials say a total of 6,500 church members took part in the challenge and set a goal of raising $150,000 with the Beans and Rice Week.

Members actually doubled that goal, raising a total of $377,000.

Beans and Rice Week proceeds will go towards three charities:

  • Cincinnati Recreation Foundation to keep community pools open on Sundays, when they would normally be closed.
  • The Strive Partnership's 'preschool promise' to help speed up the implementation of their program to provide quality preschool for more local children.
  • Compassion International so more children can stay connected to the program in third world countries–even when their sponsors stop or never start fulfilling their commitments.

"If we can get more people in our city to do more things as one, it could have a profound impact," said Brian Tome, Senior Pastor at Crossroads Community Church.

The Rice and Beans Week is just one of many happenings at Crossroads. The church is planning a one-day blitz of cleaning up the city on May 18th, called 'Go Cincinnati'.
