Flag raised in honor of McLelland, wife

KAUFMAN COUNTY, TX (KLTV) -

Another ceremony was held Monday to honor slain Kaufman County District Attorney Mike McLelland and his wife, Cynthia.

The McLellands were found killed in their home near Forney on March 30, and on Monday, the United States honor flag was raised in their honor at the Kaufman County Courthouse.

The only sound was a chain clanging on a pole as Kaufman County employees, members of the community and part of the McLelland family watched the United States honor flag be raised in honor of the McLellands.

"The way he walked and presented himself as a true believer of what good meant, the goodness in people, the goodness of our country, and the freedoms and liberties in everything that this one American flag stood for," said Chris Heisler, the president and founder of the U.S. Honor Flag organization of Mike McLelland.

The honor flag is flown all across the country for fallen law enforcement, firefighting or military officers. The same flag flew at the Kaufman County Courthouse two months ago after Assistant District Attorney Mark Hasse's death, a gesture Heisler said brought Mike McLelland to tears.

"Tears of pride on how we were going to honor his good friend Mark Hasse," said Heisler. "I had no idea that this day would come that we would be doing the same thing for Mike."

Green ribbons were visible on Kaufman County workers and around courthouse trees, a symbol Kaufman County Judge Bruce Wood said meant "hopes springs eternal."

"We not only hope, but we pray very soon that the people that are responsible for this act are caught," Wood said.

During the ceremony, organizers pleaded with anyone who has information regarding the murders of Hasse and the McLellands to contact authorities.

"We need those individuals to come forward, to bring justice to Kaufman in honor of these three souls that gave their lives," said Heisler. "In honor of them, I'm pleading with those out there on behalf of the family, I'm pleading with you: Come forward."

The honor flag will remain at the Kaufman County Courthouse under the watch of an honor guard for 24 hours. It will then go to Jackson, Mississippi, and the flags at the courthouse will return to full staff.

The honor flag will come down in another ceremony at 12 p.m. Tuesday.

The reward for any information leading to the arrest of suspects is still $200,000. Anyone with tips is asked to contact the Kaufman County Crimestoppers.
