Council approves new position to manage streetcar

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -

The Cincinnati Streetcar Project could soon get a new executive project director.

Cincinnati City Council Budget and Finance Committee voted 5-4 on Monday to create the position.

Current Banks Project Executive John Deatrick was interviewed about the job and tells FOX19 he would like to take it if it's offered.

"I would very much like to do the project because first of all, it is a great challenge and second of all, the city really needs the project as an economic development tool and a key piece of the city's transportation structure," Deatrick tells FOX19.

Deatrick has a history of managing large projects like the Fort Washington Way reconstruction.

"We are hiring someone who has an impeccable track record of bringing in very large, expensive projects, on time and on budget," Vice Mayor Roxanne Qualls said.

Council narrowly approved a salary range of between $139,000-$188,000.

The salary would be reimbursed by project dollars, but some council members still questioned creating the new position with a $35 million city deficit looming for the upcoming fiscal year.

In February, construction bids for the Cincinnati Streetcar project have come in tens of millions of dollars over what a project budget shows the city had anticipated.
