UCMC raises flag for organ donation

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -

April is National Donate Life Month. On Friday, a local hospital held a special ceremony to commemorate the event.

UC Medical Center (UCMC) held their 5th Annual Flag Raising Ceremony for Donate Life Month. The event brings together organ donors and recipients, with special guests discussing their own experiences with organ donation.

Officials say approximately 20 people died every day in the United States waiting for an organ transplant. Currently, there are around 110,000 people on the U.S. national organ and tissue registry waiting list.

UCMC's flag raising ceremony is to help raise awareness for the cause.

In 2012, hospital officials say they performed 126 transplants, including kidney, liver and pancreas.

Cincinnati City Councilman Chris Seelbach proclaimed April 5th as 'Organ Donation Day'.
