Couple pays it forward to police canine that took bullet

CBS 5 CBS 5
BUCKEYE, AZ (CBS5) -

A Buckeye canine officer has a bullet wound still healing on his back.

Thanks in large part to Ivan's bravery, his handler, Officer Kevin Rorke is doing well.

Last Tuesday, the partners were responding to a robbery at the Bank of America on 221st and Van Buren.

They tracked down the suspect about two miles away and as he is trained, Rorke let Ivan loose.

"We're together 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Ivan and I are together more than I am with my own family, so he's just like another child of the household, and so when you send him into harm's way, you do, you worry quite a bit," Rorke said.

Rorke didn't know that the 59-year-old robbery suspect, Mark Warner had a gun in his pocket, and when Ivan bit into Warner's leg, Warner fired his gun.

Rorke and another officer returned fire, killing the suspect.

"I saw the blood on him and knew that he was hit. My heart went up in my throat a little bit," Rorke said.

Scott Clement and his wife, Sherri Clement, heard about Ivan on the news and wanted him to be as comfortable as possible while he recovered, so the Clements are paying it forward to Ivan.

"In our line of work, you don't often see people want to thank us for what we do. And the fact that they wanted to help out our canine unit and help Ivan out, it's a pretty good feeling," Rorke said.
