Northcraft shines as MBraves win season opener

PEARL, MS (Mississippi Braves) - With two out and runners at first and third in the bottom of the ninth, Mycal Jones delivered a high chopper back to the mound, driving home Jose Martinez as the M-Braves walked off with a 2-1 Opening Night victory over the defending Southern League Champions.

Martinez drew a two-out walk to start the ninth. Luis Nunez followed with a line drive single to left field, putting runners at the corners. Jones then sent the decisive chopper back to the mound, allowing Martinez to score before the BayBears pitcher, Eric Smith, had time to make a throw.

Mississippi (1-0) had two runs on eight hits to move to 3-6 in Opening Day contests. Mobile (0-1) plated its lone run on four hits. Mark Lamm (1-0) picked up his first win of the season, giving up one earned run on one hit, a walk and one strikeout.

In his Double-A debut, M-Braves righty Aaron Northcraft struck out eight batters and limited the BayBears to two hits in six innings. He faced just two batters over the minimum but did not factor in the decision.

The game remained a pitcher's duel through the first seven frames. The M-Braves loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth but could not get a run across while the BayBears also loaded the bases in the seventh but could not score.

Jones led off the eighth with a double to right-center and Alden Carrithers moved him to third with a pinch-hit sacrifice bunt. Phil Gosselin then reached on an infield single, scoring Jones on a close play at the plate to give the M-Braves a 1-0 advantage.

Mobile responded in the top of the ninth. Brent Clevlen walked and Garrett Weber doubled to put runners at second and third. Nick Ahmed followed with a sacrifice fly, driving in Clevlen and tying the game at 1-1.

Smith (0-1) suffered the loss, giving up one earned run on two hits, a walk and two strikeouts. David Holmberg started and worked six innings for the BayBears. He held the M-Braves to four hits while walking three and striking out five.

In game two of this five-game series, M-Braves RHP J.R. Graham (0-0, 0.00) counters BayBears' RHP and former M-Brave Zeke Spruill (0-0, 0.00). First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM at Trustmark Park. Gates open at 6:00 PM.
