Convicted drug dealer gets 3 life sentences

Collins was sentenced to three life sentences. Collins was sentenced to three life sentences.

The Caddo Parish DA's Office calls Waco Collins a violent drug dealer, and on Thursday Judge Craig Marcotte handed him three life sentences.

"He's the head of a very violent, greedy, and arrogant organization," Shreveport homicide detective, Rod Demery says. He was on hand to testify for the prosecution on Thursday during the sentencing phase of the trial of Waco Collins.

Assistant DA Jason Brown asked the judge to consider Collins' past while handing down his sentence. Collins has been convicted of drug possession and distribution, armed robbery and aggravated battery -- violent crimes that Brown believes shouldn't be overlooked.

Marcotte agreed and deemed Collins a multiple felony offender, a special status that results in an automatic life sentence.

"He is somebody we're looking at in the system that merits a life sentence due to his habitual status. This individual is one we're talking about. We're talking about a drug dealer who uses guns to kill people," said Brown.

Collins is also accused in a separate deadly cold case, one they believe involved drugs. He faces a murder charge for allegedly gunning down Shannon Golston outside his Shreveport apartment in 2009.

The gun - now key evidence in the case - was pulled from Champion Lake by dive teams from the Shreveport Fire Department. That piece of evidence turned the cold case hot, and gave Detective Demery something he didn't have previously, a suspect.

"Over the past 14 months we've discovered Mr. Collins is responsible for transporting an obscene amount of Cocaine, Marijuana, and Ecstasy into Caddo Parish," said Demery.

Collins' life sentences are without the benefit of parole or probation.
