Stolen Saturn Vue brought back to Hopkins County Sheriff's Office
COOPER, TX (KLTV) -
The two inmates who escaped from the Hopkins County Jail on Tuesday have been captured in Delta County, according to the Delta County Sheriff's Department. The inmates were arrested in Cooper, Texas by law enforcement officials at 4:47 p.m., about 20 miles from the jail where they escaped.
"I bet I haven't slept more than 6 hours in the last two days, since all of this happened," said Sherri Sims.
Sims had been accompanying her daughter on her morning paper route, nervous the inmates were still in town since their escape from the Hopkins County Jail on Tuesday morning. Brian Allen Tucker, 45, and John Marlin King, 39, were awaiting trial for capital murder, and facing evading arrest indictments, respectively.
The Hopkins County Sheriff's Department received a tip from a pawn shop clerk, who reported that someone had been trying to pawn jewelry left in the stolen vehicle Tucker and King were driving. The person trying to pawn that jewelry gave authorities the information about the pair's location in Cooper.
Law enforcement officials located the men in a two-story red barn in a pasture. The men were surprised to see law enforcement there. Officials said the two fugitives did not resist arrest, and were taken into custody quickly.
Harman Singh, who works at a gas station near the home in front of the barn said undercover police swarmed the area.
"I actually got scared, because I work here late nights, so I was like, 'OK, I was right next to them,'" Singh said.
Kali Sharpton, a 13-year-old neighbor, was home alone when it happened. She described the arrest as overwhelming.
"They had their guns, and their bullet vests on, and I'm just hysterical," Sharpton said.
The two have been charged with escape while confined, a felony and violation of parole.
Two people in a house near the barn were arrested and charged for hindering an apprehension. The stolen SUV the men had been driving was also found down the road.
KLTV 7 knocked on the door of the home in front of the barn. A man inside said he didn't want to go on camera, but said everything is "OK."
