Woman who faked son's cancer sentenced to 20 years in prison

Posted: Updated:

WETUMPKA, AL (WSFA) - An Elmore County woman who told the community her son had cancer to profit from donations from well-wishers has been sentenced to prison for theft.

Stephanie Nicole Jones was sentenced  to 20 years in prison this morning in Elmore County.

Jones, 23 of Titus, pleaded guilty to theft by deception charges after she falsely claimed her 5-year-old son had terminal cancer and collected donations on his behalf.

Multiple businesses pitched in the fund what she said was her son's dying wish - a trip to Disneyworld.

Jones told authorities back in 2011 that it was, "a bad mistake that spiraled out of control."

Jones was originally due to be sentenced back in February, however the proceeding was rescheduled for today after Jones suffered a "medical emergency."
