Hunter Tomlin, 8, is recovering Tuesday night at Children's Hospital in Dallas, where he had surgery to remove a tumor.

Tomlin's physical journey, followed by KSLA News 12, took a sharp turn Tuesday after receiving surgery to remove an overgrown tumor around his eye.

So far, the family says doctors have removed a majority of the tumor, saving his eyesight in the process.

The Marshall community rallied around Hunter after finding out about his need for surgery. It raised thousands of dollars for the surgery through the "Change for Hunter" campaign.

Hunter has Neurofibromatosis, a genetic disorder that attacks the body's nerves and tissues.

In anticipation of Hunter's surgery, community members have started a string of local fundraisers.

Hunter's school, David Crockett Elementary School, raised more than $3,000 for Hunter's medical expenses.
