Timbers to play against team of 8-year-olds

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Whether or not you're a soccer fan, today's Portland Timbers match will be the perfect opportunity to cheer on Portland's boys in green.

And by boys in green, we mean The Green Machine - a team of 8-year-olds that includes a boy named Atticus Lane Dupre, who was diagnosed with cancer last fall when he started to feel pain while playing soccer.

Make-A-Wish Oregon is helping Atticus' wish come true by giving his team a chance to play against Portland's Major League Soccer team at Jeld-Wen Field.

About two years ago, doctors found a cancerous tumor wrapped around one of Atticus' kidneys. Doctors removed it, and for the next year Atticus had to endure rounds of chemotherapy.

The Make-A-Wish event page says Atticus missed his final soccer game of the season because of his cancer diagnosis, but his soccer teammates were there to support him. Now, thanks to Make A Wish, Atticus is hoping to return that favor with a match that allows his whole team to play.

So far, more than 1,200 fans have RSVP'd that they'll attend. The match is Wednesday, May 1 at 11:30 a.m. Gates open at 11:15 a.m.

A select group of Timbers players and coaches, including Darlington Nagbe, Will Johnson and Jack Jewsbury, will play in the match.

The first 100 fans at Jeld-Wen Field will receive a commemorative scarf.

Atticus and his family will also get a unique game-day experience at the Timbers home match May 2 against the New England Revolution.
