Mayor Karl Dean helps slice Metro government's 50th birthday cake
NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -
Metro Nashville-Davidson County marks a milestone Monday with 50 years of consolidated government.
Mayor Karl Dean joined several other city leaders and dignitaries in kicking off the celebration by praising the work of past leaders, calling their move toward a consolidated government a "model of efficiency."
Dean said that efficiency helped attract businesses and even sports teams like the Tennessee Titans to Nashville.
And, the mayor says, the best is yet to come.
"Clearly there is a buzz about the city," Dean said. "People and businesses are attracted to cities that run efficiently and are effective, and I think our form of government allows us to be more efficient and more effective."
A birthday bash for the city is planned for Saturday from noon to 3 p.m. at the Public Square downtown. Organizers say there will be free food from historic Nashville restaurants, and - of course - live music to celebrate the golden anniversary.
