Dissed on daily deals

These days everyone is looking to save money and score a great deal, and many of us love those amazing daily deal offers that pop up in our inbox.

19 Action News looks into these amazing deal offers, only to find some offers aren't working out as advertised, and complaints about major daily deal companies are piling up.

The offers sound good and deals like pay $15 dollars for $30 dollars worth of food, get three oil changes for $49, or train your dog for half the price are hard to resist.

Jay Johnson, a daily deal buyer, found a cleaning deal he couldn't resist. Johnson explains, "I went to try and schedule the cleaning by calling the vendor and the cleaning company never called me back."

After Johnson phones the daily deal company that sent him the offer he purchased, they sent him back to the cleaning company. Again, no response, and as time passed and more dust accumulated, the voucher eventually expired. Johnson's response, "You pay for the service and you put effort into calling and to try to chase someone down. As time goes on it gets frustrating."

We found that the number of consumers frustrated by deals that aren't as promised is growing. A multi million class action suit claims one company sold deals that expired in an unreasonably short timeframe.

Meantime, Better Business Bureau (BBB) records reveal more than two thousand consumer complaints against major daily deal companies, a majority of them filed this past year. The BBB attributes the lack of follow through on these deals to the popularity of the offers combined with overwhelmed businesses.

The Better Business Bureau's CEO Carrie Hurt says, "Consumers have been so quick to take advantage of those opportunities especially with the service industry that small company's couldn't keep up with the volume."

The daily deal sites Brand Activation Association spokesperson Bonnie Carlson reports "The Daily Deal sites now have learned from this problem and are creating schedulers who work with that service establishment and create a process of how many deals, how many redemptions they can take per day so they're not overwhelmed."

The Brand Activation Association says daily deals are still a win-win for customers. Carlson says "Consumers get a great deal and it gives them a chance to try something new."

The association recommends when considering a deal to read the offer's terms and conditions of each offer carefully.

When handling a good deal gone bad, experts recommend contacting the site that sold the deal and request your money back.

When 19 Action News contacted the daily deal site that sold Jay Johnson the cleaning services. They refunded the amount he paid for the offer.

The site said it will always refund the price the consumers paid for a voucher if a business closes, an event is canceled, or if a company refuses to accept a coupon.
