HARLAN COUNTY, KY (WAVE) - A south-eastern Kentucky couple is behind bars after a child was allegedly placed in a freezer.
According to the sheriff in Harlan County, Randy Hammons, 24, abused his girlfriend's 3-year-old son, then placed him in a deep freezer. He then closed the lid and sat on top.
The child's family said Hammons left the boy in the freezer for about 20 minutes.
The child's grandmother, Portia Bearden, said she called Child Protective Services several times because of the alleged abuse and explained Hammons was, "Biting him in the face. Hitting him. Picking him up by the face. Hanging him upside down on the door."
Court documents claim Hammons caused "serious physical injuries to the 3-year-old."
The child, along with his five brothers and sisters, were removed and placed in protective custody.
Hammons has been charged with attempted murder and is being held on a $50,000 bond.
The child's mother, Connie Jenkins, has been charged with criminal abuse.
The grandmother said she and other family members will go to court and try to get full custody of all six children.
