Freedom Fighters: Milton Saxon

LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) -

On February 18,1945, U.S. Marines stormed the island of Iwo Jima in the first American attack on Japanese home islands in World War Two.

It was to be a costly battle, one that Milton Saxon describes as "27 days in Hell."

By some miracle, Saxon avoided being wounded in the ferocious fighting, although his two best friends were hit and other friends killed.

Victory on Iwo Jima was strategic to the planned bombing of Japan. But that victory was costly with the U.S., suffering 6,821 deaths out of more than 26,000 casualties.
