$60K in heroin found abandoned along I-40 near Nashville

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A $60,000 mystery began to unravel in the unlikeliest of places - along Interstate 40 just outside of Nashville - and investigators now want to know who is behind it.

Normally, if you found something worth $60,000 just lying around you would be thrilled, but not this stuff.

For about a week, police believe, three bundles of heroin sat undisturbed and unclaimed near mile marker 178 between Nashville and Dickson.

A man was with his two grandsons when his car broke down and he spotted something strange on the side of the road.

"The oldest grandchild spotted the package and alerted the grandfather, and he went over and looked at it," said Josh Ethridge, with the 23rd Judicial Drug Task Force. "He didn't know if it was some kind of explosive or what it was, so he picked it up and threw it away to get it away from the grandchildren. And that's when he called the police."

The bundles were inside a gallon freezer bag and looked like explosives or tightly-wrapped green burritos and smelled like vinegar.

The find is so rare no one can remember anything like it happening before.

Those who work in drug interdiction say they find people with drugs and people without drugs, but they are almost never going to find drugs without people.

Maybe an amateur drug smuggler tossed it out the window during a traffic stop, or perhaps someone got scared and threw it out, deciding the drugs weren't for them.

The 23rd Judicial Drug Task Force hopes that maybe some other law enforcement agency knows something about a possible recent traffic stop near eastbound I-40 mile marker 178, near the Trooper Todd Larkins Memorial that could help them solve this case.

"Another theory besides it could have been a traffic stop, sometimes on the interstate they have different kinds of markers to hide the drugs and have someone else come pick it up," said Ronnie Moran, with the 23rd Judicial Drug Task Force.

Either way, drug detectives are just pleased this massive quantity of heroin will never go into someone's arm.

The John Tyler Lions always seem to look sharp in their uniforms. But thanks to East Texas lawyer Keith Miller, the Lions will look better and play safer. Helmets that advertise lowering the impact of hits, and possibly reduce the amount of concussions, come with a hefty price-tag. Miller's donation of 7,500 dollars, will go to help the lions cover that cost. "Keith Miller's been a big sponsor of John Tyler High School football program for years now.  I know it's...More >>
