The Smith County Jail captain has been placed on leave pending an internal investigation.
Sheriff Larry Smith confirmed that Captain Charlie Baker, the jail captain, has been placed on paid leave while a policy violation allegation is investigated. Sheriff Smith is not involved in the investigation in case an appeal is needed.
According to Texas Commission on
Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education records, Baker has a total of 27 years of law enforcement experience, all with the Smith County Sheriff's Office. He joined the sheriff's department in 1981 and has served as a jailer and peace officer.
