Huntington ISD school board approves concealed weapon policy

HUNTINGTON, TX (KTRE) -

A panel of board members for Huntington Independent School District have approved a policy to allow a select few teachers and personnel to carry concealed weapons on all four of its campuses.

The decision comes after five out of six members voted yes to the policy at a meeting Monday night at the administration building. The new gun policy is adapted from a model policy created by the Texas Association of School Boards.

"It allows the board to select individuals who have gone through extensive training to have a weapon on the premises," said Dr. Eric Wright, the superintendent for Huntington ISD.

Wright says he has spent several months researching different concealed weapon policies and concluded the model policy, which has also been adopted by Herald ISD and Van ISD, will work for Huntington.

"It gives our employees authorization, you know, selected employees to concealed carry after they go through a significant amount of training. It just gives us the flexibility if we have some areas we feel that need some additional security so that we can safeguard our campus and our kids," said Wright.

The decision comes months after the tragic shooting in Newtown, Connecticut when twenty children and six adult staff members were shot and killed in a mass murder at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

Wright says they will only allow a select few individuals who have concealed handgun licenses and who complete extensive training and evaluation to carry weapons.

"We are going to work with the Lufkin Police Department and the Sheriff's Department and some other entities to provide some training and it's going to be really intensive and there's a lot of different parts that will go into it," Wright said.
