Green Twp: Trustees vote against selling land to CMHA

GREEN TOWNSHIP, OH (FOX19) -

Green Township trustees voted on a resolution Monday to not sell the land on Westwood Northern Boulevard to the Cincinnati Metropolitan Housing Authority (CMHA).

They added to that resolution to recommend the scattered sites approach, with 32 the maximum number of units in Green Township. The trustees also hope this project can be spread out over two to three years.

The vote is one step closer to a clearer picture of what Green Township's residents can expect. Cheers and applause rang out in the administration building on Monday evening as the Board of Trustees announced the result of the vote.

"I want to thank you for your courage in dealing with this in this way and a very difficult situation," said resident Dave Lopez.

"We're not against public housing, but we are against putting it all in one place," agreed resident Bernie Hess. "And I am so happy to hear that you have listened and we really, really appreciate it. I want to thank all of you for that."

While residents were relieved by the resolution, many, including the trustees, see there are still many unknowns ahead.

"I think we should say to them, roll that up real tight and shove it," said Cheryl Volk, who opposes the required public housing. "That we don't want those funds because I believe we can fund our own needs here."

Green Township not selling the Westwood Northern Boulevard land takes only one option off the table for CMHA. Otherwise, the trustees have little to no say in CMHA's future plans.

"We don't have to keep doing it the way it's always been done," Volk added. "We've got to think of other solutions because this is not working for me."

Just because the trustees denied the housing authority access to that land, it does not prevent another 32 unit facility from being built elsewhere. A representative from CMHA said it is too early in the planning phase to say if that would happen.

The trustees promised Green Township residents that they would be as involved in the plans as CMHA would allow.

"You've got our support," Hess assured the trustees. "Absolutely."

A spokesperson for CMHA also said that there are no plans to use eminent domain to require Green Township turn over the land.

CMHA has a meeting on Tuesday at 6 p.m. that the public is invited to attend, with a deadline of March 31st to have a final plan on how it will add the 32 units.
