Alabama Basketball knocks off Stanford, 66-54 in NIT

The Alabama men's basketball team defeated Stanford, 66-54, in the second round of the National Invitation Tournament on Saturday in Coleman Coliseum to keep its season alive.

"It was a great effort from our guys today from start to finish," Alabama head coach Anthony Grant said. "Our defensive intensity was where we needed it to be.  You look at the numbers and they made more threes against us than you'd like to give up, but they took a lot of them. Over half the shots they took were threes."

The Alabama defense held the Cardinal to 31 percent field goal shooting (18-of-58) and just 34.5 percent from beyond the arc as Stanford hoisted up 29 3-point attempts for the game.

"I thought we were very effective with our press and we were able to dictate the pace," Grant said. "Our guys were really locked into what we needed to do from a defensive standpoint and that was the difference in the game.

Sophomore guard Levi Randolph led the Tide with 16 points while grabbing six rebounds and two steals. Alabama's two freshman played big roles in helping the Tide get the win. Guard Retin Obasohan had a career-high 14 points while grabbing a career-high six rebounds while forward Devonta Pollard tied his career-high with eight rebounds, which was also a team-high.

Sophomore forward Nick Jacobs had 10 points and six rebounds off the bench. Junior guard Trevor Releford had 10 points and a team-high two steals.

The Crimson Tide went 22-of-26 (84.6 percent) from the free-throw line which was the second most free-throws made in a game this year, the most was 29 against Dayton on Dec. 5. Stanford went 8-of-9 (88.9 percent) from the free-throw line, which makes Alabama 21-3 when shooting the same amount or more free-throws than the opposition.

Stanford guard Chasson Randle led the Cardinals with 11 points. Alabama was able to limit first-team All-Pac-12 player Dwight Powell to just two points on 1-of-6 (16.7 percent) and eight rebounds. He averaged 15.3 points and 8.4 rebounds on the season coming into the game.

Alabama plays at home again on Tuesday, March 26, against Maryland in the Quarterfinals of the NIT. The game is at 6:30 p.m. (CDT) from Coleman Coliseum and will be televised by ESPN. The Radio broadcast will be carried on the Crimson Tide Sports Network.
