PD: Man posing as utility worker violently attacks elderly man

MURFREESBORO, TN (WSMV) -

A man allegedly pretending to be a Murfreesboro Electric Department worker is accused of tying up an elderly man with a bungee cord, then beating and robbing him.

John Hornsby, 72, is as tough as they come, and police say he didn't go down without a fight when the imposter entered his house Thursday.

"He grabbed my arms and pulled them behind me, and I was fighting he was trying to tie my hands with that bungee cord," Hornsby said.

Hornsby was no match for a man nearly twice his size.

"I was scared, because I didn't know what he was going to kill me or what he was going to do," Hornsby said.

The suspect pretended to be a Murfreesboro Electric Department worker and claimed there was an "electrical leak" in the lines, saying he needed to come inside and check Hornsby's refrigerator at his Meadowgreen Street home.

After Hornsby took the man into the kitchen, the suspect made his move.

"I was right here, and he was trying to tie me up," Hornsby said. "I slipped on the floor and went down, and he hit me. He banged my head on the floor, and he banged my head on the freezer."

Hornsby said the crook was after one thing.

"He (asked), 'Where's your money?'" Hornsby said.

The robber took Hornsby's wallet with $100 and credit cards inside but he still wasn't satisfied.

"He said, 'I'm going to kill you. I'm going to shoot you,'" the victim said. "I said, 'You're going to have to kill me, because I don't have any more money.'"

The fake electrical worker is still on the run Friday evening.

Murfreesboro police said there were scattered power outages in parts of Murfreesboro and they believe the suspect took advantage of that to find his victim.

"Overall, just someone using this as an excuse to get in someone's home and attacking them for their money is very serious, and it's something we want to find out who is responsible," said Murfreesboro police spokesman Sgt. Kyle Evans.

Hornsby still has a big knot on the back of his head along with a cut over one eye and a bruised hand.

"(He was) 6' tall and over 200 pounds. I didn't have a chance fighting him with strength," Hornsby said.

The suspect ran up about $1,000 on Hornsby's credit cards at Kroger, The Home Depot and Walmart, and investigators are working with those stores to identify the man from surveillance video.

Murfreesboro Electric Department officials say workers will not enter your home unless customers set up an appointment first. Click here to see the MED's employee identification procedures.
