Suspected drug dealer accused of retaliating against couple

George Stewart George Stewart
NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A man is facing attempted murder charges after a couple dodged bullets and had their north Nashville home set on fire Thursday evening.

The fire started just hours after the suspect shot at it in apparent retaliation for its residents, Melissa and Terry Knighton, complaining about drug activity in the neighborhood.

The fire was reported about 7:30 p.m. in the 1700 block of 17th Avenue North.  Police arrested George Stewart in connection with the incident.

Police said Stewart targeted the two people after a year-long dispute.

The couple told police Stewart shot at their duplex and car in retaliation for trying to rid their street of drugs.

The Knightons claims Stewart deals drugs on their block, asked him to leave and reported him to police.

Around 4:30 p.m. Thursday, the couple said Stewart fired 6 or 7 shots into their home and car.

They weren't hit by the bullets, but while at the police station, someone set their duplex on fire.

Stewart is charged with attempted murder but not setting the fire. He's being held on $1.5 million bond.

When the town of Gilmer is mentioned in relation to sports, the Buckeyes powerhouse football program immediately comes to mind. And that's fair considering they have won three state titles and racked up 13 double digit win seasons since 2000. But a small 1A school about nine miles away deserves some attention these days as well.
