School rallies for young student fighting incurable disease

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

People of faith believe that when you're seriously ill, you need to surround yourself with people who care for you, and that's what's happening these days at Donelson Christian Academy.

The entire school and staff is rallying around little Paisley Kelley, a 9-year-old student facing a terrible disease.

Paisley is adorable, but she is also very sick. That is why the entire school Thursday wore lime green shirts and lifted prayers for their friend and classmate.

"It's cool," Paisley said.

The young girl is fighting Niemann–Pick disease - a genetic disease that causes her liver and spleen to keep growing larger and leaves her in constant discomfort.

"My stomach hurts," she said. "I wish I could do something about it."

Niemann–Pick does not yet have a cure, so the other kids at DCA came up with the idea for T-shirt days, bake sales and other little surprises to keep Paisley feeling special.

"Paisely, we are from the junior class, and we just wanted to let you know we are behind you, and we're praying for you and we love you," said one student, presenting Paisley with a basket of goodies Thursday.

And so does Paisley's third-grade teacher, Robbie Ingram.

"They are so kind. They treat her with so much kindness and love," Ingram said.

The whole class prays every morning for Paisley and then again right before lunch.

"She is the most amazing child I know, and she's a joy to teach every day at school," Ingram said. "Whether she's having a bad day or not, she always has a sweet smile."

All the money the school raises goes to Niemann–Pick Foundation in search of a cure.
