Smith County Sheriff's Department now offering chaplain program

Posted: Updated:
SMITH COUNTY, TX (KLTV) -

More changes for the Smith County Sheriff's Office and the jail system in the county.

The sheriff's office is now beginning to meet the spiritual and emotional needs of its staff and inmates.

The sheriff's office announced that they will be offering a chaplaincy program for their work force.
Officials say with the difficult work and often disturbing scenes the sheriff's office is exposed to, they decided to offer a counseling/spiritual comfort program to employees if they wish to use it.
At the Smith County jail, they will also be revamping their chaplain program, offering more spirtual leaders for the inmates to visit with.

"Sheriff Smith wants to make sure the spiritual needs of everyone who is interested in talking to and being ministered to are met, whether that's an inmate or someone who works in the Smith County Sheriff's Office. And so the jail program and the chaplaincy program that are now in place to do that," said Sheriff's Department spokesperson John Moore.

The chaplain program will be offered at the main jail in downtown Tyler, as well as at the low risk facility.
