No mayor for an ETX town

ALTO, TX (KLTV) -

One East Texas community will soon be leaderless, and it seems no one wants the job.

The city of Alto will be without a mayor after the May election. That's because no one submitted paperwork to run for the office by the deadline to file for the may election.

"Just no one wants to touch it right now," former city council member Herman Martin said.

Herman Martin says right now the city of Alto is at a crossroads. No one wants to be the mayor. Herman says it's because of the difficulties the city is going through.

"With all the things going on in the community, I don't think anyone wants to get involved with it," Martin said.

The former mayor did not file for re-election and the deadline for candidates to submit paperwork in time for the May election has passed. And no one tossed their hat in the ring.

Angelia Guereca works at the Pic and Go and is running for city council in May.
She says people will run for other positions, but no one wants to be in charge.

"Other people that have been in city council and have been mayor say it's just a big mess down there and no one is willing to work together to come to any type of agreement on anything," Guereca said.

She says she's running to try and change that.

"I've been here for so long and my family has been here for years and years and someone's got to do it," Guereca said.

Herman used to be a city council member and said it wasn't always like this.

"When I was on city council we certainly had our difficult times, but it wasn't anything we couldn't work through," Martin said.

Since there are no candidates, once the new city council is formed after May elections, they will have to appoint a mayor.

Until a mayor is appointed, city council member El Thacker will have to continue to fulfill the duties of mayor.
