BLOOMBURG, TX (KSLA) -

A horse is dead and its rider injured, after they were struck by a car in Cass County Tuesday night.

It happened around 8 p.m. on FM 3129 near the intersection with 3rd St. in Bloomburg.

Texas DPS. Trooper Wayne Johnson says 30-year-old Sharita Renee Young of Texarkana was airlifted to LSU Hospital in Shreveport, where her current condition is unknown.

42-year-old Mark Clayton of Bloomburg was not injured, but his 4-door 2011 Chevy Malibu was wrecked and had to be towed from the scene.

The roadway was shut down for a brief time, but has since reopened.

Tpr. Johnson says the horse was dead by the time officers arrived.

TX DPS is still investigating, and will be looking into whether reflective equipment was used. Young was believed to have been riding in the roadway after dark when her horse was struck.

Young was riding with a group of others on horseback. No other riders or horses were injured.
