SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -
The historic Municipal Auditorium in Shreveport is set to close for major renovations in just a few short weeks, but not before one last big tribute to the man and the music that helped make "the Muni" such a landmark.
"A Last Evening with the King" will feature Shreveport native DJ Fontana, who met Elvis Presley during his fateful stint at the Hayride and went on to become Elvis' drummer for the next 14 years.
Fontana last performed at the Municipal some 15 years ago.
An onstage presentation from the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame will take place during the event.
The tribute show will also feature award-winning Elvis tribute artist Donny Edwards, billed as "The next best thing to the King," along with the Fever Tribute Band and the southern gospel group, The Blackwood Quartet."
The Municipal Auditorium is closing in April for renovations.
Organizers of the tribute show say this will be "the last opportunity for DJ (Fontana) to see and play at the venue in its original condition."
Bryan Wooley, Executive Director of Double J Events, says, "In talking with ‘Friends of the Municipal" president Louise Burton and SMG (the company which manages the municipal), we determined that the best way for the municipal to enter its new phase, was with a tribute to one of its most famous performers. Elvis' performances at the Municipal helped grow his popularity beyond Memphis, which resulted in historic ties between Elvis, Shreveport and Municipal Auditorium."
