Fans pitch tents for limited Opening Day tickets

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -

Reds fans began pitching tents early Friday morning to get their hands on a limited amount of tickets for Opening Day on April 1st.

Fans told FOX19 that some started getting to the park as early as 4 a.m. They continued to line up throughout the day in hopes of getting their hands on tickets.

"We do this every year. This is the way we roll," said Terry Weathersby.

"It's like a national holiday in Cincinnati," added Butch Cain.

Terry Weathersby lined up this morning at 7 a.m. and said he had to pack snacks for the whole day to keep his spot in line.

"Some bologna, bought me some miracle whip, eggs, chips, corn on the cob," said Weathersby.

Those who've done this before say weather normally isn't too much of an issue towards the end of March, but even with these cold temperatures, they're committed.

"I got about two or three jackets in there, and I wish I had a heater though because I'm going to need it tonight," said Cain.

Fans are passing the time in whichever way possible including Michelle Johnson who says it's actually been a pretty productive day.

"I just brought my work with me, my computer. I've been in contact with my boss all day and calling the teams and everything else," said Johnson.

There's a total of 1,000 view level seats for $32 and 500 standing room for $20 available. Each fan is allowed to buy a maximum of four tickets.

Once they're gone, they're gone.

"We are dedicated fans down here. Come on down because it's going to be good this year. It's going to be great," said Weathersby.

According to ticket officials, 1500 tickets usually sell out in about 40 minutes. The Reds kick off their year with Interleague play against the Angels.

"Opening Day has many traditions, including fans being able to buy tickets at the box office for this first game of the season," said Reds COO Phil Castellini, Chief Operating Officer of the Cincinnati Reds.

Last year's tickets sold out in under one hour. The Opening Day ticket sale will happen rain or shine.
