KCFD: Man loses 2 limbs in shredder accident

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

A man lost two of his limbs Monday in a shredding machine accident at a Kansas City business, firefighters said.

Firefighters and ambulance crews were called about 10:30 a.m. to ABC Tire Recycling, located at 4401 Gardner Ave., near downtown Kansas City.

When crews arrived they had to rescue an employee who had fallen into a tire shredder feet first.

"It came in as a traumatic rescue, when they arrived on the scene we got information that an individual fell into a tire shredder and was separated from two of his limbs," said Battalion Chief James Garrett, a spokesman for the Kansas City Fire Department.  "We have investigators here on the scene investigating."

Authorities are not releasing the complete details of the accident.

The man, whose age was not released, was rushed to an area hospital. Officials say he is in critical condition.

U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration officials are on the scene investigating exactly what happened.
