Man in stolen car leads police on chase

SMYRNA, TN (WSMV) -

A Smyrna man driving a stolen car tailgated a woman for several miles, getting so close at times that she couldn't even see his headlights. The woman got so scared she ended up calling police who were able to track them down.

Cops ended up chasing for man for about 15 miles.

The woman, Jamie Hylton, had just left the Walmart on Enon Springs Road in Smyrna last night when she noticed a car following her.

"I pulled into the Bowling Alley on Weakley Drive, and he followed me there, too," Hylton said. "I parked and he pulled up behind me and turned off the headlights."

Hylton left and decided to dial 911. A dispatcher guided her through the streets of Smyrna and ended up leading the suspect right into the path of a police officer.

"My heart starting pounding really hard," Hylton said. "I was shaking so much that my eyes were getting blurry. It was crazy."

Once the cop turned on his blue lights, the chase was on.

The stolen black Mustang was driven by Danny Collier, 25, of Smyrna. Despite his refusal to stop, police dash camera video shows the man obeying traffic laws at first. He was driving at slow speeds, used his turn signal, and even stopped at red lights, but that would soon change.

"At one point when he got on Murfreesboro Road his speed did hit speeds of 80 mph," said Chief Kevin Arnold, Smyrna Police Department.

Collier is seen on the video running over spike strips on Hwy 70 near Florence Road, but that still didn't stop him. Even with blown-out tires, he kept going, dragging the spike strips behind.

The chase lasted roughly 15 minutes from Smyrna to Murfreesboro. Smyrna officers discontinued the chase after crossing city lines and let Murfreesboro police and Rutherford County Sheriff's deputies take over.

"They (Smyrna Officers) followed policy," Arnold said. "It was almost like a well-acted play the way they did it."

Collier ended up crashing on Battle Ground Drive in Murfreesboro and was arrested and taken to jail.

Hylton is just glad she made the right decision to call police, but she's still wondering why the man chose to follow her.

Collier faces a host of charges including evading arrest, driving on a revoked license, theft of property and vandalism.

He remains in jail tonight on a $14,500 bond.
