The Upshur County Commissioners voted to support a joint house resolution bill on Friday morning.
The Bill HJR103 would allow the people of Texas to amend the constitution to abolish a 1999 mandate to restore freedom and flexibility to counties to reduce the number of precincts, justices of the peace, and constables. It would also allow them to increase the number as needed.
The bill was written by State Representative David Simpson. The bill is currently in committee.
There is opposition from constables and citizens, claiming that the bill gives commissioners too much power.
If approved by the full senate it would go on the ballot in November.
