Trinity County law enforcement officials and the Houston Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals joined forces Thursday afternoon to rescue 21 dogs and cats from a property littered with dead animals, trash, and feces.
"It was pretty tough in there. There is animal feces everywhere. Furniture is torn up. You can tell they were sleeping on the bed. It was pretty intense. The odor was almost unbearable," said Trinity County Chief Deputy Sherman Jones.
Deputies from the Trinity County Sheriff's Office and the Precinct 4 Constable were on the scene with the Houston SPCA. The property is located at the corner of Helmic and Apple Springs Road near Apple Springs.
Investigators with the Houston SPCA brought dozens of pet carriers of various different sizes to assist in relocating the animals from the property. Some of the animals had to be caught with animal control poles.
"They'll be transported to there Houston SPCA, where a veterinary staff is on standby and will perfrom a medical evaluation on each and every animal," said Houston SPCA Media Relations Manager Meera Nandlal.
According to authorities, the owner of the animals, who is being evicted from the property, is currently living in Lufkin with family members. He was not home when the rescue was conducted, and law enforcement officials are planning to serve an animal cruelty warrant on the person.
When authorities went to go into the house, the smell of feces and urine was overwhelming.
"I've never in my life seen something to this degree. I've seen individual animals that were abandoned on the side of the road that were close to this bad, but I have never seen this large of a number," said Jones.
The Houston SPCA left the scene with 21 animals. There were some animals that ran off into the woods surrounding the home and others were in unreachable locations inside the home's attic.
