Dallas woman accepts 4 years probation for DWI with five kids in car

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) -

A 55-year-old Dallas woman accepted a sentence of four years of probation at a plea hearing Wednesday afternoon in connection to an incident in which she drove drunk with five children under the age of 15 in the car with her in June 2012.

Patsy Denise Cotton and her attorney, John Tunnell, appeared in Judge Barry Bryan's 217th Judicial District Court. Originally, Cotton was going to have to serve a two-year prison sentence in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice prison system, but the state and her defense attorney reached an agreement in light of the fact that she had no prior DWI convictions on her record.

"I was driving, and I had been drinking," Cotton said during the plea hearing.

In June 2012, Cotton was arrested at a Lufkin gas station. According to Sgt. Rodney Squyres, an off-duty police officer noticed Cotton pull into a gas station with a child on her lap. When the officer approached the vehicle, he smelled alcohol and called police.

When the responding LPD officer performed a field sobriety test on Cotton at the scene, she was found to be intoxicated.

According to the police report, Cotton had five children in the vehicle, all under the age of 8.
