ASU Honeybeez head to Chicago to meet at-risk elementary students

Posted: Updated:

Alabama State University's popular Honeybeez dancers will tape an episode of the nationally syndicated "Steve Harvey Show"Friday in Chicago.

The Honeybeez cheerleading squad/dance group has become one of the most anticipated acts of the ASU Mighty Marching Hornets halftime show for years. Now, people around the nation will get to see what the excitement is all about.

That he's aware of, ASU band director James Oliver says the Honeybeez are the only known cheerleaders of girth (plus-size) in the nation. Oliver will travel with the Beez to Chicago and tape the show before a live audience on March 15.

Harvey, a longtime fan of the Honeybeez, first saw the Beez at the Magic City Classic football game in Birmingham when he was taping his radio show there two years ago.

"Steve Harvey fell in love when he saw the Honeybeez, and now he is giving us a chance to appear on his nationally televised show," Oliver said. "The ladies are just thrilled to have this opportunity."

Oliver created the Honeybeez in 2004, and since that time the group has become a popular addition to the Mighty Marching Hornets. The group of plus-sized women is known for wowing crowds with high-energy dance routines.

Oliver said the Honeybeez are an inspiration on and off the field.

"The girls do more than just dance. They go to high schools on the off-season and talk to girls in the schools about self-confidence, self esteem, being healthy and handling bullies," Oliver said. "When we go to ‘The Steve Harvey Show,' we're going to let the world know their motto: ‘Love the skin that you're in.'"
