John Tyler Set To Make Strides

The John Tyler Lions have their work cut out for them this season.  They are coming off a 1-9 season and 13 straight district losses.  But things are looking up.  They join a new district, minus Lufkin, they have 14 returning letterman, and good team speed. And while head coach Kelvin Ratliff can't guarantee any wins, he can guarantee the Lions won't be outplayed.

"Certainly, you want to get the kids in shape," said Ratliff.  "You're gonna spend a lot of time trying to condition and get them in shape. Get them to work when they're tired. They're fatigued and they can't concentrate any more. We spend a lot of time teaching kids to be focused when it's difficult."

John Tyler opens the season Saturday, August 28, with the East Texas Classic at Rose Stadium. They play Texas High.
