LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) -

A late night shooting Saturday left one man hospitalized and his wife in jail.

According to Longview Police, Gregg County Precinct 4 Justice of the Peace Sam Lawson was shot late Saturday evening, and his wife has been arrested.

Around 11:30pm Saturday, the call came into Longview Police that a shooting had just occurred in the 24-hundred block of Pam Street. Upon arrival, officers found Sam Lawson in the utility room of the home.

Police were told that Mr. Lawson and his wife had been arguing before she retrieved a handgun and allegedly shot Sam Lawson. A probable cause of arrest report says Ina Lawson contacted 911 and told authorities she shot her husband.

"When we arrived on scene we did locate one victim, Sam Lawson, who was shot. there was an argument between the two, a gun came into play," says Longview police officer Kristie Brian.

The probable cause of arrest report says Ina Lawson was detained along with a handgun.

Family members say there's more to this, its not just a domestic issue.

"This is not an issue about domestic violence, this is an issue about mental illness. My mom had made threats like this about killing my father for the last 5 or 6 years," says the Lawson's daughter Debbie Drayden.

Drayden says she tried for years to get her mother into a mental health facility.

"I did everything I possible could I went to the police department I begged the police department please if you can't do anything else, do a welfare check, take the guns out of her house," Drayden says.

"My mom suffers from some stage of paranoia schizophrenia. I told the police department that she was a threat to herself and others," she says.

Time after time, she says her pleas to hospitals and police were ignored.

"I had been back here several times to try to put her in a mental facility," says Drayden.

Mr. Lawson was transported to Good Shepherd Medical Center with serious injuries. The suspect identified as 70-year-old Ina Lawson was arrested and transported to the Gregg County Jail and is charged with Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon - Family Violence. Her bond has been set at $100,000.

Sam Lawson is listed in good condition in a Longview hospital.
