Unemployment down, East Texas hiring

A new report issued Friday shows the nation's unemployment rate has reached a new low since 2008.

In February of last year, the unemployment rate was recorded at 8.3%. Now, according to the department, it's down to 7.7%.

"The big story this morning is that the private sector produced 236,000 jobs and most analysts thought it was going to be right at about 160,000," said Tom Mullins with the Tyler Economic Development Council.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics recorded that in December 2012, North Dakota had the lowest unemployment rate of 3.2%, Texas was just a few spots behind at 6.2%. 

Mullins said a lot of jobs are coming to Texas for a number of reason.

"Texas is gaining about slightly over 1,000 people moving here every day. Texas has been consistently ranked as the best state for business in the country for the last five years," Mullins said.  

He said Texas averages between 1 and 2 points below the national unemployment rate, which has been around 8%, until recently.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor statistics reported that in February, unemployment decreased in professional and business services, construction and health care.

Here in East Texas, the owner of Express Employment Professionals, Ricky Gill, said they have seen a lot of hires in a few of those areas and more.

Gill said they've seen a lot of activity in construction, accounting, health care and manufacturing/warehouse.

"I know Governor Perry has recruited for companies from California to move here and other states so I know we have a good environment for manufacturing companies to come to Texas. Health care has been hot for a while and it probably will be for a good while going forward," said Gill.

"I think that the thing we're most interested in is to see consistent pattern. You know, we're hoping this isn't just a blip, that it goes up for a couple of months and then gets knocked back down," Mullins said.
