Convenience store pushes for beer and wine sale expansion in Smith Co.

Posted: Updated:

The sale of beer and wine could expand into more parts of Smith County later this year.

Signatures collected from a Smith County Precinct One petition have been verified. The next step is for the Smith County Commissioner's court to approve the proposition for the November ballot.

If passed, beer and wine could be sold for off-premise consumption at grocery and convenience stores in precinct one.

Precinct one is largely within the Tyler City Limits, but it includes more land to the west and the north. A large part of this area already has beer and wine sales because of Tyler's election to go wet last November. But convenience stores outside the city limits are hoping the precinct one proposition will pass and benefit them, too.

Kidd Jones convenience stores is the primary business supporting the push for beer and wine in precinct one. Since beer and wines sales were approved within the City of Tyler, Kidd Jones convenience stores have seen more foot traffic and watched their bottom line grow. They're hoping the precinct one proposition will help them stay competitive outside the city limits.

"We have a couple stores that are outside the city limits that are severely disadvantaged by not having beer and wine, especially since not too far down the road my competitors have it. We're just simply trying to make everything equal," says Gregg Kidd, Vice-president of Kidd Jones Convenience Stores.

If passed, the Kidd Jones convenience stores on Highway 31 West and Highway 64 West would be allowed to start selling beer and wine.
